Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Brian Robert Bill was a man of extraordinary gifts and limitless potential. Born on August 23, 1979, in Stamford, Connecticut, Brian was a true Renaissance man, excelling in countless fields. An accomplished Eagle Scout, he graduated from Trinity Catholic High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Norwich University in 2001. A natural adventurer, he was a skilled fly-fisherman, golfer, skier, and skydiver. He was also an accomplished mountaineer, with successful summits of Mount Elbrus in Russia and Aconcagua in Argentina. He completed several marathons and even obtained his commercial pilot's license.

Brian’s lifelong dream of becoming a Navy SEAL began when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 2, 2001. He completed the rigorous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in June 2003, earning his coveted Trident.

Brian was a highly decorated combat veteran, recognized for his heroism and valor on multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His numerous awards include four Bronze Stars with Valor, one of which was for "extraordinary heroism" where he risked his life to pull a mortally wounded teammate to safety under heavy enemy fire. He was also awarded a Purple Heart, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and a Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor, among many others. His courage and dedication were renowned among his teammates, who remember him for his equanimity and constant smile.

On August 6, 2011, Brian's life was tragically cut short when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was aboard, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down by insurgents in Afghanistan's Wardak Province. Brian was part of a Quick Reaction Force responding to assist U.S. Army Rangers under fire. The devastating attack claimed the lives of all 38 on board, including 17 members of SEAL Team 6, marking the single greatest loss of life in Naval Special Warfare history.

In the wake of his death, Brian was remembered as a kind, compassionate, and fiercely dedicated man. He was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, joining the ranks of America's honored dead. His legacy of excellence and sacrifice lives on through various tributes, including the Brian R. Bill '01 Memorial Challenge at Norwich University.
