Old Glory: A Bourbon Cocktail on Red, White, Brew

Old Glory is a bourbon cocktail built on Red, White, Brew, with cherry liqueur for its namesake color and the blend's bold, rich roast underneath.

Coffee Cocktails

Red, White, Brew was named for a feeling before it was named for a roast. It is bold, it is rich, and it finishes smooth, which is exactly the shape a good bourbon cocktail wants underneath it. So we built the drink the name was asking for.

This is a medium roast with weight, not a light cup you have to coax flavor out of. That means it can sit next to a real pour of bourbon and hold its own instead of disappearing under it. We added a half ounce of cherry liqueur, not for sweetness, but for the note. Red belongs in a drink called Red, White, Brew, and cherry is the honest way to get there without reaching for food coloring.

Brew it strong, the same as you would for The Standard. A drink this direct does not forgive a weak pot.

Cocktail

Old Glory

  • Serves 1
  • Time 5 min
  • Base Red, White, Brew, brewed strong and chilled

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon, 100 proof or close to it
  • 1 oz Red, White, Brew, brewed strong and chilled
  • 1/2 oz cherry liqueur, Luxardo maraschino or a real cherry brandy
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 1 wide strip of orange peel
  • 1 brandied cherry, for the glass
  • 1 large ice cube

Method

  1. Chill a rocks glass and set one large cube in it.
  2. Combine the bourbon, coffee, cherry liqueur, and bitters in a mixing glass.
  3. Fill with ice and stir 30 seconds. You want it fully cold before it hits the glass.
  4. Strain over the large cube.
  5. Express the orange peel over the surface and drop it in. Add the cherry.

Stir, do not shake. This drink is meant to look as clean as it tastes, no foam, no cloud, just the color doing the talking.

This one is built to be shared, not sipped alone. It is a round for the table, not a nightcap.
